The path to a happily-ever-after between Lily and Jarrod is not smooth or certain, mostly because of Jarrod's insecurities. On the trip, Lily meets Jarrod's family, who are all as eccentric as he is, and finds out that Jarrod's now-deceased brother Gordon was the family favorite. Jarrod, who has been in training, has learned that Eric will soon be coming home, so he plans to challenge him to a schoolyard brawl. Lily and Jarrod do somehow become a couple and she accompanies him to his seaside hometown on his longtime mission: to get back at the "big Samoan", Eric Elisi, who bullied him in school. After Lily is laid off due to "downsizing" (in reality, fired) so will no longer see Jarrod regularly, she does anything to insert herself into his life, despite his obvious attraction to her colleague Jenny. Lily believes they are destined to be together, partly because they both have upper-lip moles. It is the first feature-length film directed by Taika Waititi. My only quip is it feels like it's been done before. It's a very funny film, with some good directing and a decent score. Shark is a quirky comedy from New Zealand, with 'Flight Of The Conchords' Jermaine Clement, and a cast of unknowns. She does whatever she can to ensure that she is always the one who waits on a customer who regularly comes into Meaty Boy just after noon. partialy thanks to whimsical little interludes of animation, but mainly because it ties blithe absurdity to a rock bed of emotional truth. In New Zealand, Lily McKinnon, a shy waif who marches to her own drumbeat, clerks at a Meaty Boy fast-food joint her only true friend is her brother Damon. Most of the critics in their reviews were comparing this film with Napoleon Dynamite but to me this New Zealand creation had its own distinctive style mainly due to above mentioned animated segments and the emotional honesty. One of the things I really liked in this movie were the segments done in stop motion - utilizing both props and actors. The film was shot entirely in New Zealand, in and around Wellington and Porirua, during 25 days in October and November 2005 with a crew of 35 workers. The film's script was a result of the Sundance Film Festival Director's and Screenwriter's Labs workshops in June 2005. ![]() With Jenny not at work one day, Jarrod gives Lily an invitation to his "dress as your favourite animal" party to pass along to her, but Jenny crumples it up and throws it away upon receiving it. Jarrod doesn't even notice her nd he has his eyes glued to Lily's workmate, Jenny. She got a job at a local fast food restaurant and has a crush on of the customers - Jarrod (Jemaine Clement), a geek who works in a video game store. ![]() Lily (Loren Horsley), a shy, wistful girl, is a songwriter when no one is listening. The story of two (or more) nerds was put together so well, that sometimes I wanted to become a nerd myself. Ward, Devendra Banhart and British group The Stone Roses. Fast and flowing, 99 downhill, it feels a little like a combination of Corners trail with a hint of Split Enz and lots of smooth. And to listen as well because the soundtrack features New Zealand artists The Phoenix Foundation, Age Pryor, The Reduction Agents, and Tessa Rain, along with M. But even on a small screen this film financed by the New Zealand Film Commission which had its world premiere at Sundance in the World Cinema Dramatic section of the festival, was impressive to watch. A funny New Zealand romantic comedy directed by Taika Waititi waited 6 years to be seen by me! What a shame I didn't have a chance to see it in a cinema. ![]()
