Two songs from the demo were re-recorded in their definitive form ("Carrier of Wounds", "You, That May Wither"). "Written in Waters" fulfills every promise the band made on their "Those Who Caress the Pale" demo from the previous year. The overall feel is similar to that achieved on "Bergtatt", and both albums were recorded at the same studio (Endless). The hefty bass tone is countered by a warm, reedy guitar tone that sounds like it was played on a practice amp. There are polyrhythms and time changes here that were previously unheard in black metal. Their chemistry is amazing, particularly between the bass and drums. I can imagine them jamming together for hours, locking into each others' rhythms. Ved Buens Ende is the fruit of all three musicians challenging themselves and each other. Bassist Skoll appeared on both "Bergtatt" and Fimbulwinter's ferocious "Servants of Sorcery". ![]() Guitarist (and multi-instrumentalist) Vicotnik drummed for Dødheimsgard and played guitar in Manes (which evolved into Ved Buens Ende). Drummer (and multi-instrumentalist) Carl-Michael Eide played for Ulver, pre-"Bergtatt". The three musicians in Ved Buens Ende had already proved their black metal credentials. Listen to the rhythmic interplay on the instrumental part of "I Sang for the Swans", or the clean section of "Autumn Leaves'', or the jaunty opening of "Remembrance of Things Past". With "Written in Waters", Ved Buens Ende must have been the first extreme metal band to channel Slint. The entire post-rock genre traces back to their album "Spiderland" (along with a couple of other records). Slint only existed for a few years in the late 80s and early 90s, but their imprint was seismic. Their main non-metal influence seems to have been Slint, the legendary American band who played a technical, jazzy, jangly style of 'math rock'. Ved Buens Ende were also looking at the emerging alternative rock scene for inspiration. ![]() These bands played a style of black metal that took influence from folk, classical music, 70s prog and 'Rock in Opposition'. Their contemporaries included Fleurety, In the Woods., Ulver, and Arcturus. They were part of a Norwegian black metal underground that operated behind the scene's bigger (and more notorious) names. Ved Buens Ende may have been the first band to blur these boundaries. This would have been unthinkable before the turn of the millennium, when extreme metal was dominated by people who played Warhammer. Many recent converts to underground metal have arrived from the fringes of indie/alternative music. Both use layers of guitar in a similar vein to My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless". Both are famous for extended pieces which rise and fall and rise again. Compare a black metal band like Wolves in the Throne Room with a non-metal band like Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Countless bands have blended it with palatable genres like 'post rock', exposing their art-school aspirations in the process. That statement holds less truth than it did twenty years ago. ![]()
